A Katy family and community is grateful after three teens and Precinct 5 deputies jumped into action when a 5-year-old boy and his great-grandmother ended up in a Katy Bayou over the weekend.

A 5-year-old boy and his great-grandmother were playing around a Katy Bayou behind the Nottingham neighborhood near Park Pine Drive last Sunday. Around 5:00 p.m. the boy lost control of his bike and rode into a Katy bayou.
His great-grandmother, who didn’t know how to swim jumped in after him and authorities state she briefly went underwater.
Three teenagers who attend Taylor High School heard cries for help and rushed to the scene. Water was at the great-grandmother’s mouth when she was on her toes, and she struggled to keep her great-grandson up.
“I got a call saying that a kid fell in the water and a lady was trying to hold him,” says Harris County constables Office Precinct 5 Sergeant Mirran. “When I got there I saw the teenagers standing around the water and they had already gotten a rope.”
Sergeant Mirran got to work in trying to help. She called in more Harris County deputies, and it took a team to first get the rope around the boy and pull him up, and then they were able to get his great-grandmother.
According to Sergeant Mirran, the drop from the concrete incline into the water was 10-feet so getting to them was a challenge. The boy was very scared and held tightly to her through the ordeal but then said that he knew she’d never let him go.
“This was such a blessing,” says Sergeant Mirran. “We all love happy news and happy endings. This could have easily ended differently.”
Katy is full of walking trails near creeks, community lakes, and bayou spaces. When out enjoying these trails it’s important to take precautions and know your surroundings and capabilities.
“Those kids and the great-grandmother need an award,” says Sergeant Mirran. “It was by them and God’s Grace they didn’t drown.”
