Katy-based teenage band, Garbage Girlfriend is the only all-female band running to be the opening act at the popular music festival. All band members are local high school students and recently recorded their first professional album set to release this summer.

Voting closes tomorrow night for the opening act for this year’s BuzzFest. The popular music festival selected 35 bands to compete for the honor and the public will choose the winner. Garbage Girlfriend is the youngest and the only all-female band in the running and they want your vote. Anyone can vote online.
Garbage Girlfriend was founded by Evelyn Moreno 2 ½ years ago and all band members are local students. Evelyn Moreno (17) drummer, is a junior at James E Taylor High School; Christy Ferra (15) guitarist, is a freshman at Mayde Creek High School; Ciona Casino (18) bassist, is a senior at Seven Lakes High School; Liv Teixeira (15) lead vocalist, is a freshman at Bridgeland High School.

The band regularly plays gigs all over the area, but their biggest audiences to date were at
Warehouse Live Midtown in Houston in January with more than 450 people, and Central Green
Park at La Centerra in Katy with about 300 people.
“Performing at BuzzFest would be a dream come true,” says Evelyn Moreno, the band’s founder. “The Pavilion holds more than 16,000 people. Performing in a space that big, before world-famous bands, our friends and family, is an amazing opportunity. We’re honored to be included for consideration among all the other amazing local bands.”
Evelyn Moreno has always loved music. For years she was a student at School of Rock in Katy and part of their “by audition-only” band. Moreno took inspiration from her first breakup and formed an all-girl rock band. For the record, she’s on good terms with her ex and happy the experience resulted in Garbage Girlfriend.
Moreno is also on the Taylor High School varsity swim team and does commercial acting and modeling.
"If people were to vote for us to play BuzzFest, it would help us achieve our goal of being musicians,” says Christy Ferra, guitarist. “Everything that we worked hard for would pay off. That kind of support would mean everything to us!"
Ferra is an athletic trainer at Mayde Creek High School.
"If the people of Katy vote for us for BuzzFest, it would be a huge affirmation that our passion for music and that our effort has been fully expressed to our audience,” says Ciona Casino, bassist. “That kind of support would be so validating and mean the absolute world to us. Winning this contest would help us perform in front of bigger crowds and provide us with more opportunities to grow."
Since the band’s creation is 2022, they have been playing stages across Greater Houston from headlining KPRC TV's Crawfish Fest at Houston's Discovery Green to rocking the crowds at iconic venues like Typhoon Texas, BFE Rock Club, Acadia Bar & Grill, and was the opening for EMO cover band Shosty at Warehouse Live Midtown in January.
Garbage Girlfriend just recorded their first five-song EP album with a professional producer from Nashville and will release their first song this summer. Their experience performing locally formed relationships that led to finding their producer. This summer they have a show set for July 26, but hope they can add BuzzFest to their list of performance venues.
"This support would mean everything to us because it would help us achieve a huge dream of ours,” says Liv Teixeira, vocalist. “Every single person that votes for us to reach this big stage is helping us fulfill our dreams."

Vote Online
Online voting closes Wednesday night and votes can be cast daily online. So Katy fans can vote today (Tuesday) and tomorrow.
“We would be grateful if our Katy neighbors would show their support by voting for us. It only
takes a few seconds to vote, and those votes could potentially change our lives,” Evelyn says.
This year’s BuzzFest is on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion. The big acts that Garbage Girlfriend hopes they can open for include Chevlle, Marilyn Manson, Blue October and others.
