This fall Katy ISD high schools have been celebrating homecoming festivities that include football games, the dance, alumni events, and other school-wide traditions. For a new high school, it’s all about setting the traditions for future generations and today is a big first for Freeman High School, Katy ISD’s newest high school.

"It's all about the year of first for us. We're working to create and foster that small-town community feel by including our Nelson Junior High and Youngblood neighbors," says Freeman High School Principal Gina Cobb.

Establishing their community is something important to Freeman High School as they will include their feeder campus’ nearby Youngblood Elementary and Nelson Junior High. Thursday the school held a pep rally and parade that invited the schools and local community.

Today they are revealing a campus-wide mum for all to share.

Students take pride in being part of these experiences and setting the standard for the traditions.

“To be in the first homecoming of my school will be a great experience,” says Tilak Jivani. “I will be playing in orchestra for our homecoming, and it is going to be a fun opportunity. I am really looking forward to my first and schools first homecoming.

About Freeman High School

Freeman High School welcomed thousands of students this year as Katy ISD continues to experience rapid growth especially in the northwest quadrant of the district. The school is located at 7800 Katy Hockley Road next door to Nelson Junior High and across from Youngblood Elementary. It is named after the Freeman Family.

The Freeman family has a strong civic service connection in Katy that includes deep roots in agriculture and education. W.E. and Mae Belle Freeman, the first generation of Freemans who settled in Katy in the late 19th century, understood the importance of a strong education and sacrificed so their children could attend school. Their children, Mae, Jesse and Dick finished the eighth grade at South Mayde Creek – the highest level offered at the time. Two of their other children, Bill and Buck, later graduated from Katy High School. Five generations of Freemans have graduated from Katy ISD schools and members of the sixth generation are currently enrolled in the district’s schools.

“We are building memories to look back to memories after few years,” says Jivani.

Katy Magazine wishes a wonderful Newcoming to Freeman High School, the home of the Golden Eagles!
