The Arc of Katy, a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, now has a 14-passenger bus to transport those it serves to events and activities. The bus is a result of a successful annual gala earlier this year.
Bus is a Result of Gala Funds
Look for the new Arc of Katy bus. The slightly used 14-passenger bus recently joined the non-profit as the result of a successful gala earlier this year.
Organization Expresses Thanks
“We are so grateful for the generous community support and donations received at The 2019 Arc of Katy Gala Celebrating Hometown Heroes,” said Fred Shafer, President of The Arc of Katy Board of Directors. “The successful gala paved the way for the new bus.”
Giving Members Community Opportunities
The Arc of Katy provides opportunities for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to be included as respected and active members of the community throughout their lifetime.
“Safe, reliable transportation enables us to shuttle our participants to the many attractions and events available throughout the Katy Area and Greater Houston,” Shafer said.
Arc Members Go to Events, Activities
The Arc of Katy organizes trips to various events and activities for those it serves.
The Arc of Katy will use the bus to transport participants to a wealth of activities and programs including various physical fitness activities. They also visit Starbucks, the Rodeo, and arboretum. They participate in community service projects like singing at the annual Chamber Christmas lunch and more.
As Katy Grows, So Does Arc
“The Arc of Katy aims to expand the programs and services we offer and also to increase enrollment opportunities as the need grows for programs like ours,” Shafer said. “Improving transportation capabilities is an important factor for those aims.” They currently serve around 50 people.
Hurricane Harvey Moved Arc to New Home
The Arc of Katy started in 1989. They moved to their own building in January of 2018 after the facility they were using, provided by Katy YMCA, flooded during Hurricane Harvey. They are located at 5819 10th Street, Suite C.
Facility Home to Adult Day Program, Summer Program
Getting their own facility was part of a long-term goal. Through the help of the Board of Directors, parents, Arc participants, and community donations, the building was transformed into an inviting facility for the Adult Day Program and Summer Program.
