Fueled by a breakup, a Katy teen took her love for music and launched an all-girl rock band that embraces the embodiment of teenage rebellion and empowerment. Katy’s own Garbage Girlfriend will take the stage at Central Green Park this Saturday.

All-Girl Teenage Rock Band

Sixteen-year-old Evelyn Moreno has always loved music. For years she was a student at School of Rock in Katy and part of their “by audition-only” band. Moreno took inspiration from her first breakup and formed an all-girl rock band.

“‘Evelyn, you are a really nice person but a garbage girlfriend,’” Evelyn Moreno recalls the text. “I realized, hey, that’s a pretty great band name. I had been wanting to start my own band and this gave me the push to do it.”

For the record, she is on good terms with the ex-boyfriend, so no one should be mad, but rather happy the experience resulted in a great Katy-based band.

Free Show this Saturday

This Saturday August 10, 2024 from 8:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Garbage Girlfriend will be on the Central Green Park Stage.

Since the band’s creation in 2022, they have been playing stages across Greater Houston from headlining KPRC TV's Crawfish Fest at Houston's Discovery Green to rocking the crowds at iconic venues like Typhoon Texas, BFE Rock Club, Acadia Bar & Grill, and will be opening for EMO cover band Shosty at Warehouse Live Midtown in January.

Meet the Band

Garbage Girlfriend is made up of five Katy teenage girls. Evelyn Moreno is the band’s founder and plays the drums. She goes to Taylor High School and is on the Mustang’s varsity swim team.

“It was important to me that the band be all girls because it is not common to have all-female rock musicians playing together and it’s girl power,” says Moreno. “We’ve had a couple of members change since we started but we are going strong.”

Christy Ferra, 14, plays guitar and is a student at Mayde Creek High School. “Ever since I was able to hear, I was always listening to music,” says Ferra. “It’s always been a part of my life, but randomly when I was ten, I asked my dad, ‘Can I play guitar?’ and no surprise he said yes.”

In school, Ferra is an athletic trainer and also does theatre.

Liv Teixeira, 14, is Garbage Girlfriend’s vocalist. She attends Bridgeland High School where she has been in orchestra for three years.

I think that the biggest thing that I hope people get out of our performance on Saturday is our passion for music,” says Teixeira. “I think that when we perform we always have this incredible opportunity to connect with an audience which is so special; it's honestly what made me fall in love with performing.”

Also, on vocals but also the keyboard, is 14-year-old Paetow High School student Mya Howard. “I’ve been into music since I was six and knew it was something I wanted to do when I found that I enjoyed playing for other people and entertaining others,” says Howard.

Outside of the band, Mya is a junior varsity cheerleader at Paetow High School.

And rounding up the group of talented ladies is 17-year-old Ciona Casino of Seven Lakes High School. Casino plays bass guitar. “Since I was little I have always been surrounded by music because of my dad; I remember when I turned 10 my dad got me my first guitar and my love of music has only grown since then,” says Casino.

In addition to the band, Casino is in FCCLA at Seven Lakes High School, which is a nationally recognized club that stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

An Alternative Rock Band with a Future

Garbage Girlfriend plays a lot of covers but will be performing two original songs tomorrow night. They are an alternative rock band.

While they don’t currently have an album out, they hope that is in their future. They are working on their own music.

“We are close to putting out a new single for release and are really excited about it,” says Moreno. “If there are any record label execs reading this… hint hint… we’re ready to go!”

All girls hope to be able to continue with Garbage Girlfriend and that the band finds success as they continue to perform locally.

Garbage Girlfriend is thankful for their community support and especially to the Willow Fork Drainage District for having them out to Central Green Park tomorrow. They are also thankful for the support of their families.

“We hope we inspire other kids and teens and show them that they can do what we are doing,” says Moreno. “And we wouldn’t be here today without adult bands like Shosty, Lucid Illusions, and 307 Departure giving us the chance to play big shows with them.”
