School starts back next month. This is a great time for parents to involve their students in local ways to give back. Here are two local nonprofits that are offering opportunities for Katy families to give back and support local students.

Katy ISD will welcome students back to class on August 14. Many students in Katy need help getting ready for a successful year. This is a great opportunity for families to show their children the importance of giving. Here are two ways you can help support local students.

Katy Christian Ministries

For 30 years Katy Christian Ministries (KCM) has hosted their Red Apple School Supply program that helps provide students in need with the tools necessary to be successful for the school year ahead.

In 2020, KCM Social Services incorporated the Happy Feet program in conjunction with the Red Apple School Supplies. The Happy Feet program provides new pair of shoes to start the school year.

“With the population growth in the Katy area, we see the immediate need for basic needs assistance such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food insecurity, and other presenting needs such as getting ready for back to school,” says KCM Executive Director Deysi Crespo.

Many Katy families are replenishing the food supplies they lost during the power outage from Hurricane Beryl, as well as focusing on fence repairs, roof, and other damages sustained. This is creating a financial hardship for many households.

“Now more than ever, we need to come together to alleviate the stress via tangible ways of providing the essential items for the children for their school year,” says Crespo.

In 2023, KCM Red Apple School Supplies and Happy Feet Program assisted 1,392 students. This year, they project to exceed the number of children.

Currently KCM is $20,000 short from missing their $70,000 goal. All donations must be made by August 31, 2024.

Give online. Email redapple@ktcm.org for additional information.

Clothed by Faith

Clothed by Faith is also accepting donations to help get local kids ready for school. Last year they gave school clothing to 11,261 children from 23 different school districts across the Greater Houston area and they anticipate that the need will be greater this year.

Clothed by Faith has set an easy breakdown to show families how their donation can impact a student in a week.

  • It costs $30 to give a child clothing for a week.

  • $20 for shoes.

  • $10 for underwear and socks.

You can give online or by sending a donation via Venmo- @clothedbyfaith

Serving Through Dignity for Over 10 Years

Clothed by Faith is a Katy based non-profit that gives a week's worth of clothes to those in need in the greater Houston/Katy area. They only accept new or gently used clothing- think about how the items will give dignity to those in need.
