A Katy mom went to go pick up her special needs son when she discovered that her tires were stolen. Crimes like this seem to be on the rise and authorities share what vehicles are considered high targets.
On Sunday, January 5, 2025, Katy mom Justine Garcia went out to her car with plans to go pick up her son from his grandparent’s house in Bandera. Her plans quickly changed when she found that her vehicle had no tires on it.
Local Authorities Share What Vehicles are at Risk
“I couldn’t even get a quote to get this remedied because everyone was closed on Sunday; the weather was about to go psycho, and I couldn’t even get it towed safely,” says Justine Garcia.
Garcia has lived in the Marquis Grand Lakes apartment community in Cinco Ranch. The complex doesn’t have cameras so there is no footage of who took the tires off her Toyota Corolla.
She contacted the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, who sent a deputy out right away. According to FBCSO, these crimes are common and especially with high-target vehicles such as Toyota Corolla’s and Honda Civics. Their parts are in high demand and the department is seeing an increase in thefts related to these vehicles.
Neighborly Love
“I’ve been super fortunate with my community and everyone reaching out to help. A friend from church let me use her car to go pick up my son, another friend asked if they could pay for new tires, and another friend sent some money just to help,” explains Garcia. “I am so in awe of how loving and supportive people can be.”
Due to crimes like this, Garcia and her neighbors are talking about installing cameras on the patios with views of the parking lot.
While Garcia loves her community and neighbors, they have all seen an increase in crime since 2020. Three months ago, her roommate’s care was broken into and all of his tool were stolen. She says that they were fortunate that renter’s insurance covered everything in record time.
Garcia has a message for the person or people who did this and caused her a great inconvenience.
“I hope whatever you’re going through gets better soon,” she says. “In the meantime, please treat people with more care.”
