Katy ISD Makes Changes Due to COVID Surge, Staff Shortages
Katy ISD announced changes this week as the District welcomed staff and students back after holiday break. The District opened the 2022 year with all campuses operating at Stage 3: Modified Operations to address an increase in reported COVID cases.
“Our first week back from the holiday break has presented certain challenges that include staffing shortages, and an uptick in COVID-19 cases,” says Katy ISD superintendent Dr. Ken Gregorski.
“Katy ISD’s Operations Division, which consists of bus drivers, food service employees, custodians, skilled trades, and other essential staff, has been particularly hard hit by staffing shortages, with over 200 absences due to illness and another 250 vacancies,” says Dr. Gregorski.
To meet this challenge, the District has made adjustments to bus service, menu options, and campus maintenance schedules.
“From educating our students, keeping our campuses clean and safe, and providing transportation to and from school, these men and women are essential to the success of our school district,” said Brian Schuss, Chief Human Resources Officer.
Dr. Gregorski also shared that the District is experiencing a shortage of teachers. “We continue to mitigate this matter to ensure the quality of instruction for our students remains uncompromised,” says Dr. Gregorski.
