Katy ISD has planned to honor military heroes during Veterans Day events throughout the district. Celebrations include concerts, flag ceremonies, receptions, and one big Army homecoming surprise. How are you honoring veterans today?
Friday Night Lights Full of Surprises
A Friday night football game featured a celebration for veterans and Katy military. Mayde Creek and Morton Ranch high schools combined in a halftime performance worthy for all who were honored. In a joint performance, the bands and drill teams honored each branch of the military.
The appreciation didn't stop there. Katy ISD Police Officer and Mrs. Texas, Shannon Dresser, was invited onto the field to represent her husband, Sergeant First Class Chance Jackowski. The ceremony honored him for his service in Korea for the past year. During the ceremony, Dresser and Sergeant Jackowski's 11-year-old daughter were stunned when Sergeant Jackowski walked up behind them. The sweet surprise wowed the crowd at Legacy Stadium.
"I was completely shocked!! As the announcer started saying, 'Back from a one year deployment,' I figured I was going to be giving someone an award for coming home," says Dresser. "I had no idea the surprise was my husband!"
Friday was already an emotional day for Dresser as she had her last day with KISD Police Department. She is moving to Colorado as her husband is being transferred to a base up there.
"It has been an absolute pleasure," says Dresser in regards to her time with Katy ISD PD. "Friday's game was such a fabulous surprise and I am so thankful for everyone who helped make it happen."
