Katy Area First Responders Collect Pajamas for Domestic Abuse Victims

The Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office is collecting new pajamas to help women and children fleeing domestic violence. There are several drop off locations in the Katy area.

Harris County Constable Calls for New Pajamas

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and Harris County Constable Ted Heap is asking residents to donate new pajamas to help victims of domestic violence. This is an annual drive that has been helping Katy Area families since 2017.

A Sense of Security

“I would encourage everyone to donate a new pair of pajamas at our boxes across Precinct 5," says Harris County Constable Ted Heap." At the end of the month, our Precinct 5 Victims Assistance Unit will personally distribute these pajamas to agencies which directly assist women and children who are in need of help after getting out of an abusive relationship. “

Heap says that all the pajamas received go directly to victims in this area through their department and through other agencies that provide shelter and assistance to those who are survivors of domestic violence.

“These women and children sometimes leave everything behind when leaving an abusive relationship. Something as simple as pajamas can help them on their way to getting back on their own two feet and recovering from a traumatic situation at home," says Constable Heap.

Precinct 5’s Victims Assistance Unit is collecting only new pajamas for women and children at the below Katy and Houston locations:

• HC ESD48 Station 1- 24127 Westem Centre Dr.

• Steve Radack Community Centre- 18650 Clay Road

• Thomas A. Glazier Senior Education Center- 18650 Clay Road

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

The Victim Assistance Unit of Harris County Precinct 5 assist victims, and their loved ones after a violent crime. According to their website, they provide assistance to victims in the form of advocacy, support, education, and outreach.

There are many resources to support Katy residents experiencing domestic violence.

Both hotlines are open Monday-Thursday 9a.m.-5p.m. and are answered by trained advocates.

Katy Cares supports women and children experiencing situational homelessness due to violence and abuse. This local non-profit organization offers tele-chats to support those in need.

“We are thankful to have so much help from our Precinct 5 neighbors. This annual pajama drive is always a huge success thanks to the generosity of our community and the many partners who help collect these pajamas throughout this month,” says Constable Heap.
