Kingsland Baptist Church is closing it's doors on February 25 to go out and serve the others in their annual Caring for Katy Day
For the 11th year in a row, Kingsland Baptist Church is closing its doors this Sunday and going out into the community to serve people in multiple capacities and areas. From feeding the homeless to helping seniors fix up their homes, to working at a non-profit, you can expect to see approximately two thousand volunteers out doing good for someone else.
Caring for Katy started when construction was being done on the worship center and it had to be closed one Sunday. "I suggested that since the doors of the church had to be closed, this would be a great day to take all of our members into the community to be the church," says Omar Garcia, the Missions Pastor at Kingsland Baptist Church. The staff fully embraced idea and Caring for Katy was born.
"We budget between $80,000 to $100,000 a year to meet the various needs we identify," says Garcia. Kingsland has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in service projects for Caring for Katy.
All ages participate in the community outreach project starting as early as age four.
For ages 3 and under the church provides a Bible study and a missions activity on campus for children.
Garcia recalls the year they helped a young mom whose husband was deployed in the military. "She had a long list of honey-do’s so one of our teams mobilized to help her do everything on her list," The group did interior and exterior painting, landscaping, fixed various household things, and even set up a play structure for the kids. While the crew was fixing up her home, she Skyped with her husband so that he could see what was happening. "Our service brought them both to tears."
