By Addie Davis and Natalie Cook Clark

From the most popular kids' costumes this year to the meaning of teal pumpkins and blue buckets, here is a helpful list of things to know for a great Katy Halloween!

According to USA Today, this year's most popular costumes will be Princesses, Spiderman and Avenger's characters, Batman, Witches, Ghosts, Vampire, Frozen characters, and Pirates. Katy Magazine editors predict Katy kids will also be wearing a lot of Fortnite, Disney Descendants, Joker, and Toy Story costumes.

2. Katy Trick-or-Treating Basics

Katy trick-or-treaters could ring your doorbell as early as 5 pm and as late as 9 pm. The vast majority will show up sometime between 6 -8 pm. Some neighborhoods will have dozens more trick-or-treaters than others. For example, some of the older, more established neighborhoods (Cinco Ranch Northlake, Green Trails, Kelliwood Greens, etc.) generally don't get as many trick-or-treaters as newer neighborhoods that tend to attract younger families with small children. Save time and a lot of extra walking by only choosing homes that are lit up or have Halloween decor. Once the porch light is off, it's usually a signal that the candy is gone.

3. Be Mindful of Blue Halloween Buckets

A blue Halloween bucket has become an unofficial symbol of awareness for autism. The mission of blue pumpkin buckets is to signify autism awareness. Parents of children with autism hope to carry the message to homes distributing candy in an effort to not have to explain their child’s situation, especially in the cases of being non-verbal.

4. Teal Pumpkins on Porches & Food Allergies

While trick-or-treating, you may notice some homes with teal painted pumpkins outside, which is the national color for food allergy awareness. A teal pumpkin is a sign that a house will offer treats that are suitable for any trick-or-treaters who have any food allergies or intolerances.

If you're not sure what to do or where to go, Katy Magazine has put together this Halloween Events Guide for Katy families! Enjoy and have a safe and happy Halloween!
