On Saturday, Kay’s Tea Parlour, located at 5617 2nd St. in Downtown Katy, announced that the charming destination will be closing its doors after serving the Katy area for 10 years.
Established in 2009 by Scotland native Kay McGlone, Kay's Tea Parlour has been a hidden gem in the heart of Katy. Over the years, guests have enjoyed the tea sandwiches, quiches, and homemade pies, and ordered favorites from the catering menu like Kay's Chicken Pot Pie and Shepherd's Pie.
Tea for Two
Originally from Scotland, McGlone operated a bakery in Dublin, Ireland before moving with her husband, Conor, and their four children to the United States 30 years ago. After running the French Gourmet in Houston for 16 years, McGlone decided to open her own place in Downtown Katy.
The tearoom was welcomed by Katyites who embraced the European-style food and hot tea. Kay's quickly became a popular spot for friends to meet and enjoy afternoon tea parties.
McGlone created the menu herself and invented new recipes throughout the years for her customers.
"Kay's had some of the best food I've ever had," says Katy resident Nicole Tumlinson, "My favorite was their Chicken Pot Pie."
Kay's Will Be Missed
After the closing announcement was made, many loyal customers posted their best wishes and love for Kay and Conor.
"So sad to hear that such a wonderful quaint little hometown restaurant and tea parlour is closing. We will miss the tasty food, the friendly people and atmosphere. Kay I hope your new journey, whatever that may be offers many new blessings," commented Katy resident Trish Franklin.
“Every visit, they truly made us feel at home,” says Katy resident Missy Dyches. “It was a great experience each time. Kay's will be missed.”
In a social media post, the McGlones thanked their customers for their support for the past 10 years. They will be taking time for themselves as Kay focuses on her health.
A New Beginning
As Kay’s Tea Parlour closes, a new tea parlor, Ye Olde Village Shoppe, will open and be operated by Kay's current Manager, Tracy Burleson.
“It is a different business with some of the current cuisine and many new items,” says Burleson.
The new tearoom will host an open house September 5 - 7 from 10 am to 4 pm at 1512 Avenue C in Downtown Katy. The official opening day will be Tuesday, September 10.
Kay’s Tea Parlour will be serving customers and taking orders until Saturday, August 31.
