This weekend the Tompkins High School girls’ soccer team reached the UIL State Championships in Georgetown, TX. This was the Falcons second trip to the championships since the school opened in 2013.
Semi-Finals Action
On Friday, Tompkins faced the Allen Eagles (20-5-2) in the state semi-finals. After a quiet first half, the Falcons found their footing. In the 67th minute, junior striker Barbara Olivieri swooped in and scored off a corner kick from junior Lauryn Wild. Only seven minutes later, junior Jules Haro scored from 10 yards out off a solid pass from junior Skyler Parker. The Falcons shut out the Eagles 2-0.
The win kept up the Falcons’ perfect record, bringing them to 27-0 and advancing the team to the UIL State Championships. The Falcons hoped to bring the championship title back to Katy. Taylor High School won the last UIL Girls Soccer State Championship for the district in 2006.
Six players on the current Falcons roster reached the state finals in 2017. The young team lost to Pflugerville Hendrickson (2-0) that year.
Final Game
Yesterday, the Falcons took on Southlake Carroll in the state championship at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown, TX. The game proved to be a challenge for the undefeated Falcons. The offense was unable to find an opening to score, and the defense was no match for Southlake Carroll’s offense. The Falcons dreams of a state championship title were squashed when they lost 5-0.
“This one hurts, but I’m so proud of this team and what we accomplished,” said junior Team Captain Lauryn Wild. "This team has refused to lose all season and we left it all on the field.”
The Falcons, ranked second in the state, ended with a 12-0 district and 27-1 season record. Of the 27 games they played this season they dominated with 18 shutouts. The Falcons' largest win this season was 8-0 over Katy Taylor.
Plans for Next Year
“This season we proved many wrong and proved to ourselves everything we were capable of,” said junior striker Jules Halo. “Thank you for all the support.”
With only four of their players graduating, the young Falcons team will have an opportunity to redeem themselves next season.
Sophomore Avery Burchett said, “We’re not done...we will be back.”
